Tell us the basics: Who are you, what’s your company’s name, and how long have you been at this company?
My name is Helena Richardson, owner and founder of HRichNetworks, LLC.
Established in 2009, HRichNetworks provide “worry-free” computer services to individuals and business clients in the central Virginia area. We specialize in website development and computer repair.
What brought you to Richmond, and why did you decide to start your own business?
I’m a native of New Orleans; we moved to Richmond during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, in August 2005.
As an IT professional with 20+ years experience, I’ve always provided computer services to family and friends and had the desire to start my own business. Both the storm and the recession provided me the opportunity to start my own business and make money doing something I love.
What sort of clients do you serve? What technology areas are your specialty?
We work with individuals and small to mid-sized business, we specialize in website development, computer diagnostic and resolution, and software and systems training services.
What’s the biggest reason a small business should work with an IT advisor rather than handling web design or computer repair “in-house.”
When working with an IT advisor, a company benefits in two ways: first, they will have an experienced team of professionals dedicated to managing their IT need; second, it frees them up to do what they do best. That is bringing in the revenue to build the business.
What’s a lesson you’ve learned during the recession?
The recession has caused individuals and businesses to be more selective than ever when choosing services. Each client brings a unique set of needs that requires me to stay focus and provide the most excellent service large or small to my clients with integrity and efficiency.
How do you separate yourself from the competition? What’s the thing that makes people pick you?
I separate myself from my competitors by “running my own race” I don’t take the cookie-cutter approach. I don’t see myself trying to be like the other technology companies, but I focus on being a positive resource and this will make people want to do business with me.
Is there a secret to your personal success? Perhaps a piece of advice you’ve always remembered?
The secret to my personal success is, I sincerely love what I do and I have a great support system.
A piece of advice to always remember is that credibility and Integrity are essential.
What’s coming up in the next year for you and your company? What about in the next five years?
I will join a strong contact networking group; I will also join the Chamber of Commerce and attend at least one networking function a month. At each event my target is to meet at least five new people. I would also like to join a community-service club; this will give me an opportunity to give back to my community.
In the next five years, we plan to continue to deliver exceptional service to our customers. And also expand our services into areas such as Network and Security Installation, Certification Programs
What, at your business, is the most effective way to connect with customers?
By building a network of contacts based on our products and reputation.
What’s the part of your job you dread the most?
Having to call a client and remind them that their payment is late. Especially when it’s a good client and you’ve already sent out an invoice. I often have to remind myself this is of the dreaded parts of running a business.
What’s the part of your job that excites you the most, the thing that makes you want to hurry to work?
Seeing the excitement on my clients face when I’ve completed a project and they are satisfied.
Continue to strive to reach each goal set and not be distracted, while learning new technologies and am inspired when able to teach these technologies to others.
